Surgery...... ouch!

Appendix, I hate you!
Ok so most of you know I went in to have my appendix out on Friday. According to the surgeon it was the worst he has ever done! hahaha. I guess it was welded to my insides and hard as a rock. The surgery took 4x longer than planned and I stayed the night instead of being released that day.

I've taken the last few days to recover but I'm feeling way better and I made it into work today finally. Now I have to catch up on emails. Ugg!

Funny things of note that day

- Hospital time is about 5 hours off of GMT and any other standard of actual time keeping.

- When they shave you, you shouldn't gigle and wink

- When they say you don't need to put your clothes in the bag clearly marked for your clothes it simply means that they want to lose your clothes so you can never leave the damn hospital.

- When you tell the anesthesiologist (had to look that word up!) that you are going to fight the medicine to see how long you can last... they may just blind side you with Valium so you don't even make it to the damn room to start counting.

- When a team of resident wakes you up to tell you that some noob stuck herself with your needle during the operation don't tell them "The last time I had the HiV I just used bleach and I was good to go". They may or may not find that funny

- On a serious note. You can literally negotiate almost anything in a hospital. From your need for company while you urinate to what you should be eating to when you can be discharged. Pretty funny.

Ok.. back to work for me. Yay out of the house!

Today it was like.. errr.. warm. I don't really view the weather webpages or that damned little weatherbug system tray thingy.. but I know today is beautiful out.

Why is it so mood altering?
Why does it make you wanna jam the loudest happiest music you can find?
Why does it make you want to call the one you love just to tell them they are the center of your universe?

Why..... ... ... Hell I don't know.. but it's nice out and I need to walk somewhere and get a cookie to reward myself for umm... blogging. Yeah cookie time!

World of Warboxing

So since November of 05 when I dislocated and subsequently had surgery on my shoulder I have been ass deep into World of Warcraft. I loved martial arts so much but my joints simply wouldn't hold up :( And in true JJ fashion I picked a new hobby and tried to absolutely kill it.

I picked World of Warcraft. It's a super rich and immersive video game experience that requires a great amount of dedication and leadership. But after 12 months of driving Jenny crazy with my "Raid Nights" I think it may be time to pick a new hobby..

I went out and bought boxing gloves today at lunch and boxed my good friend Mike - 6ft 7inch 290lb -Bundy. Needless to say I wasn't overly successful in my endeavor to kick a giants ass. With that being said.. I forgot how much I love to compete physically.. and how much I love the art and sport of fighting...

Maybe my arm is good enough to get into MMA? Maybe I'll be in a sling in a few months? Whatever it is.. I need passion in my life.. I need a hobby I can't ever master... and I need it soon.

Jenny, Her Mom, Her Dad, and I went to Tanglewood on the MA/NY border this past weekend. It was an all Mozart concert by the Boston Syphony Orchestra. Now.. I gotta tell ya.. I really really want to be an elitest snob that looks down on the rest of you uncultured swine with a patronizing grin... but... it looks like it's just not in the cards for me this life.

Let me explain. The picnic with her folks rocked! Andy (the chef! -- yeah yeah.. doctor schmocter.. he missed his calling in life if you ask me) made us an amazing picnic. That... was fun times. Cookies, sammiches, Gatorade, etc. This is something I could do every weekend. Now.. comes the part where I try with all my might to be snooty and I just can't hang.

A. Classical music is pretty damn good (check one for the snooty column!)
B. Sitting in hardwood chairs from 1936 is worse than a plane ride
C. Everyone there was like 150 years old and sleeping by the time the conductor waved his lazy, ass sitting down, hands.
D. No food or drink where we were sitting
E. My butt hurt so much
F. No one claps at the end of the song (fine! I'll say "end of the Piece" so I feel a bit snootier)
E. Its like a long plane ride where the captain has decided that you no longer need a refreshing drink, peanuts, your electronic devices, or your seat cushion.

Ok .. done ranting! lol

All in all it was a great time. I think next time the best bet is to be on the lawn with your picnic while enjoying some killer classical.

So Sunday was mostly travelling but yesterday and today rocked! Jenny and did the Jet Skis which was super fun. We bargained like champs and knocked him way down on the price. Gotta love Jamiaca. Today we did snorkling and that was included in our resort. It was a lot of fun. Not too many fish but the boat ride was short and jenny didn't get sea sick. Woot!

I assure you that #1 this is stock photography and #2 you'll never catch this white man in a blue speedo. Just aint gonna happen :)

The day has finally come. Jenny and I, after 8 years of pre-wedding bliss, have gotten married. Yay! It was a really cool day. We really lucked out on the weather and having our friends and family spend the night at the estate was very cool.

Looks like using my 10" sony vaio for my main computer for the last few years wasn't so good for my eyes. I have a stigmatism that was irritated by the 10+ hours of strain I was putting on them.

The good news though is that I got to buy a cool monitor, wireless keyboard and mouse! Woot!!

You can still see my little laptop right below the monitor. What a difference it is to have my face more than 12"'s from a screen all day.

I gotta tell ya this event rocks. Short track speed skating kept me up way too late on Sunday night but it's like Nascar on ice. Although.. I hate nascar.. what the hell am I saying.... Ok, here goes. This event rocks! So much fun to watch!

oh yeah, the mens halfpipe is pretty sick as well. Shawn White is amazing. I remember the US Open in 94'. Steve, Chris, and I were there watching some 8 year old kid get introduced and drop into a pipe with 10ft vertical walls. The kid was sick! He was getting out of pipe that we wouldn't have even dropped in to. That was Shawn White then.. and now.. he's the FlyingTomato.. pretty awesome. Nice job USA! -- PS I Tivo-ed the finals and haven't watched them yet.. so umm.. don't ruin it for me!! I'm hoping we made a clean sweep.

Ok this game is just pure awesomeness for the 360. I spent roughly 10 bucks (800 xbox points) purchased directly through my xbox. I then downloaded the full version of the game right from my console. I've been playing every night since. Jenny has even hopped in for the action a bit. It's a fun tetris style game that is just downright addicting. If you haven't tried the free demo on your Xbox 360, you should! You can read a review over at TeamXbox.com where they gave it their editors choice award!

Shoulder Update

I met with Dr. Brown again today. It's been 3 months since my surgery. I asked him a slue of questions about what I can and can't do. Here's the run down.

No running
No punching bag
No pushups
No jumping jacks
No repetitive motions

I can do the bike and the stairmaster though. Yippy-Freaking-Ha :) Ah well, another 6 weeks and we get to evaluate again. I only have 3 more weeks of PT so hopefully this thing starts getting much better sooner than later. Rock!

So I went to a Bane show the other day to show my support for my boy Aaron. The couple hundred kids that went parked up and down some Worcester side streets. Apparantley the residence (ie Crack Heads) aren't huge fans of sharing public parking. They stole my license plates and spray painted my wheels black. On top of that, I got a ticket for not having any plates a few days later :(

Hey, at least they didn't key my car. That really pisses me off :)

World Combat League! w/Chuck Norris

So I got a call from Jenny's Dad the other day asking if I wanted to hit a Mixed Martial Arts event at Mohegan Sun. I think my answer was something on the order of "hells yeah!".

This thing is dope. It's team based MMA with one girl on each team. It should be beyond interesting. Each team is from a different city or region around the country. I have never been to an MMA event live. I can't wait!

What's rad about this style is it's set up like my favorite Martial Arts movie of all time: best of the best

Here's some info (the more I read, the more I love this event style)

WHAT IS A WCL CONTEST LIKE?
Every team has six professional fighters (five men and one woman) in six fixed weight classes. Each contest is scheduled for twelve rounds, but like a football game, it is divided into two halves. Both halves feature six rounds each; one for every team member vs. their opponent on the opposing team. So, each athlete, barring knockout, will get to face off against their opponent twice in each contest.

(The actions listed below are subject to immediate penalization as a way of encouraging constant activity in each and every round)NO CLINCHING (intentionally tying-up your opponent's arms in an effort to stop them from punching)
NO HOLDING (grabbing the opponent's body in an effort to stop them from attacking or countering)
NO STALLING (intentionally delaying the action of a contest in any way)
NO PASSIVITY (retreating or circling without striking - or fighting only when the opponent attacks)

Today I started weight training with my PT at the Worcester Fitness Center. It feels so good to have the muscles in my arm "firing" again. He said I can do these pulldowns and whatnot at home as well. I'm psyched! My arm is moving around again!! Only a few short months and I'll be at full strength.

I just have to keep in mind that tendons heal very slowly and it will be at least 6 months before I can play the roughhouse game.

Mixed Martial Arts in my future?

As I continue with physical therapy and talk to my PT and Doctors I realize I could be good to go with MMA. This makes me tingly all over. I love training, competing, and fighting. (the good kind though). So I can't wait until i'm back to 100% and I can start training for a match.

Jenny has bought me Chuck Liddell's 6 dvd set for my birthday to keep my mind busy while I wait for my body to catch up. The dvd set is really good. It's quite advanced and fun to just watch. Rad stuff!

My mom got me this bad boy for Christmas. It's downright amazing. It has 1400 moving parts, listenes to voice commands, claps, and does 165 different actions. It knows how to avoid walls and just generally walk about the office. If you don't pay attention to it, it may pee though. It's pretty funny!

Well Twinkle (gray) has really opened up. She is jumping up on the couch to get lovins from mommy. Tabby on the other hand has mastered the high jump apparently. One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind

Today the attempt to shower was successful! The boy is smelling more like Irish Spring and less like sulfur springs. There was a lot of gaming action today as well on Battlefield II. I never thought that I would say this, but thank goodness for video games. It keeps his mind off of the pain and moves his fingers as instructed by his doctor. Also, he's down to taking one pain pill every four hours, so he's a lot less loopy. He is definately starting to look alive again. We're one step closer to recovery! Here's to hoping tomorrow's an even better day.

He's out for the count

Dear fellow Jay Johnson lovers,
Today was eventful. Upon Mr. Johnson's request we attempted to shower his filthy body, which dear friends, resulted in his passing clean out. He was seated on the comode sweating, babbling, and panting, when boom! Back of head hit wall behind toilet, with eyes rolled back in head. The force and horrible noise sent him upright again, still in a ranting stupor. I then wisely positioned my whole body behind his while we waited for him to return to this planet. I was, at the time, cool, calm, and collected, but would have been totally screwed had he gone forward or been standing up.

Standing without ultra sling in a steamed up bathroom was the cause of this dilemma.

Instead we went for the sponge bath for today. Perhaps tomorrow we shall try again. Stay tunned for another episode of "Johnson in recovery."

Post Op Day 1

Hello friends! Jenny here, blogging for our recovering pal Jay. Well, so far so good. He's been on the couch since returning home, in and out of a stupor. We were ahead of the pain til 4am. He's told me he was not so good for two hours. What else, what else??

Um...I left him in a bad situation last night when I headed to bed without taking the cover off of his pain medication. When he came upstairs he found me with a thermometer hanging out of my mouth and I was sobbing. Of course I have a 24 hour (I hope) bug, but I didn't want to admit it to him. You see every, and I mean every time Jay is sick (which isn't often), I get sick (which is often). My affliction has caused a horrible condition, which could kill the world's best nija -- flatuation. And I mean the worst rotten eggs you've ever smelt, attractive, right?

Anyhow, my fantastic father is here now taking care of the both of us (barely surviving the sent). Later, Jay and I hope to head over to the karate studio so I can break boards, but I dunno if it will happen. Gotta go -- Jay's sling needs an adjustment.

Some things have changed

So it's been 10 years since my last surgery and some things have changed.

1. The procedure is totally different
2. They have you shower with this special gel the night before and day of to get the germs off your body
3. They "block" the nerve before surgery so the pain isn't so intense after you rise from your drunken stuper.
4. It's day surgery now. No overnight. Yay!
5. No big ugly scars, just little holes.

#3 is the most important change IMHO. After I awoke from my first surgery the pain was super intense. It was nothing I have felt before. The nurse says that the ACL and Shoulder surgeries are the most painful day surgeries you can rock so this new nerve block thing should rock!

Tonight's my last karate class with Jenny and the boys for a while :(

I tested on Friday with Adam and got my Blue/w Green stripe. The test was a lot of fun but I'm pretty banged up and welcome a few weeks to just heal all my little nagging injuries. 6 months is entirely too much of a rest but I have to take this surgery seriously so I don't have to do it a third time :)

Wish me luck. The surgery is on Thursday.

Keyboard solution has changed

So I talked to the guy from AlphaGrip.com and he won't be able to get me a unit until Late Nov - Early December so I reverted my strategy back to the FrogPad - one handed keyboard and the remote mouse that works like an N64 controller. Fitness Update

Quick update on my fitness. I am at 174 (gained 4 lbs) and 12.5% body fat (gained .5% fat). I'm still eating well and doing martial arts 3 times a week so maintaining has been a breeze.

I haven't worked out since the contest though. I've been wrought with injury. The neck injury spiraled into the shoulder dislocation which then went into an abdominal tear that still hasn't healed. I'm good enough to start working out again but my surgery is 10 days away. Looks like I'll hit the weights in April. God knows I'll need it by then.

Hopefully I don't get too pudgy during my recovery process.

It's Official

Well ladies and gents, it's official. I go under the knife on November 10th. I think I made a good decision. My arm is getting looser and looser with each injury like it did 10 years ago when I lived in Salt Lake. Yesterday I was helping my future mother-in-law start a water pump and tweaked my arm pretty hard twice. It's just getting worse and worse. Looks like it's knife time suckas. I'll keep you posted. I hope to have an AlphaGrip keyboard by the time I come back to work. Pretty sweet if you ask me!

So i'm here on Sunday doing some final clean up and painting. We have our first celebrity client coming tomorrow and want the place looking as good as possible. She was on the first season of "The Biggest Loser" reality show and she wants a cool online diet application like www.fitday.com. Here's another pic of the office. This is the lounge. Slap Lesions... What?

So I'm seriously considering a new shoulder surgery. One that the doc says will allow me to do full contact sports like boxing or MMA. He said even with this crazy amount of "action" that I only have a 15% chance of pulling it out again using this procedure.

The down side is the 6 weeks in a "cast" and the 6 months of rehab with no Karate. The more I read about it, the more I want to do it though. It sounds like it's come a long way since I had my first one 10 years ago. They no longer to "open" sugery. They do Arthroscopic (little tube, little holes, little pain, little camera) surgery these days.

The doc basically said he would tighten it all down in there and limit my range of motion a bunch so it doesn't pull out anymore. Sounds good to me. I hate how far my arm goes back anyway. Everytime it's back that far the damn thing snaps out with the pressure of anything more than a high 5 from a friend.

To put my silly shoulder problem into perspective: I was trying to grab the blanket that was behind and under me last night on the couch and almost dislocated the damn thing. Sucks :(

Yup.. the more I think about it.. the more I want it.. I think i'm in.. :) Here comes 6 months of kicks :)

In a prospective study, Arciero et al5 observed that there was 80% recurrence of instability in a nonoperative group, compared with only 14% recurrence in a group with arthroscopically stabilized shoulders.

Recurrence rates after open Bankart repair are reported to be around 4%.6

The SLAP lesion is a specific injury to a part of the shoulder joint called the labrum. The shoulder joint is a ball-and-socket joint, similar to the hip; however, the socket of the shoulder joint is extremely shallow, and thus inherently unstable. To compensate for the shallow socket, the shoulder joint has a cuff of cartilage called a labrum that forms a cup for the end of the arm bone (humerus) to move within. This cuff of cartilage makes the shoulder joint much more stable, yet allows for a very wide range of movements (in fact, the range of movements your shoulder can make far exceeds any other joint in the body). A SLAP lesion is a tear of this labrum.

Karate Tournament Results

Jenny and I went to the Sturbridge Event this past Saturday (Jenny decided to just check it out and not compete).I competed in sparring and kata (forms). I got eliminated in the 1st round of sparring. The kid was quick and we clashed a bunch but he skunked me fair n square. He went on to win 2nd place out of twelve of us. So at least I can find solace in the fact that I was beat by someone who didn't totally suck :)

I pulled down 1st place in forms in a sea of 14 so that was fun and redeeming. The tournament was "ok" but it isn't something Jenny and I want to do a lot or anything. It was an experience. A lot of hurry and wait. And a lot of listening to dorks talk about how cool they are nice and loud for everyone to hear. So silly and goofy. All in all it was worth the time and energy. We had a pretty good time.

Will sent over these photos. The apartment building is about 100 yards from our house and the downtown area is about half a mile. It's crazy. The cops were outside our house re-directing traffic all day. I only had to do a bit of shop vacuuming in the basement but the poor people down the hill got rocked.

Mind Vs. Body

So i'm approaching 30 pretty quick and my body doesn't really want to cooperate anymore. I really love pushing my body in karate and would absolutely love to do MMA or at least train for the beating I deserve.

Tonight I pulled some sort of stomach muscle doing a fun kick that I really sucked at. I took a nice bath and it feels a bit better but man oh man I wish my body would stop complaining and getting injured.

At the end of class Chris, Matt, and I played a little MMA in the guard position to start. It was fun as hell. Poor Matt has been training for 15 years on how to win a fight the nastiest way possible and unfortunately all of that stuff is against the rules in MMA. (Pressure points, small joint locks, throat/eye attacks, etc) So it was fun to see him try to put his natural fighting style aside to play by the rules. I got Chris in a naked choke and he tapped out a sweet one! I called him later and he loved it as much as I did. I'm rambling now but I love this kind of stuff. I love rough-housing with friends!

Ok so the specialist was kind of a cock face. I'm off to an MRI and then back to Dr. Ego for a follow up. I'll keep you posted. My arm is back to 95% and had a good class last night but still looking for a good long term solution. Rock.

On a side note. We are working on a re-design for HitCatcher.com. It's tough to get 6 different people to feel happy about decisions and since my Irish side can get the best of me.. it's REALLY difficult :) On the plus side.. I do have the final say :) it's good to be the boss sometimes.

Andy's office set me up with a local shoulder guy for a prelim since my ortho that did the surgery doesn't do shoulders anymore. Hopefully he didn't get out of the shoulder biz because he sucked at it!

Jan 1st, 1995 - first dislocation and slight fracture while snowboarding with the gang at Wachusett

Nov 1996 - Move to Salt Lake City. Work at night - Snowboard all day - Arm perpetually dislocating on hills

Spring 1996 - Surgery performed

Late 96 - early 97 -- Pull arm out playing basketball

97 - present -- arm comes out a bunch of times. More frequency the more I ramp up fun things.

Present - Looking for long term solution that doesn't involve me living in a bubble.

Robo Arm Is A No-Go Says the Doc!

So yesterday I was all excited about "Robo-Arm". I found a site talking about shoulder replacement surgery and that sounded awesome to me. Check out the photo! It looks like this thing would kick ass and never come out again. Doc thinks otherwise (read below :-)

From Andy (My Doc!):"Oy! You DON'T want to have this procedure! Knees and hips are one thing ... shoulders are different...what you probably need is to go to a good "shoulder" sports medicine type who can figure out a way to keep you healthy...god only knows I try!"

He summed it up last night as a last ditch effort to keep your arm working, not something you would want or request. Damn!

He knows the Ortho that works with the Celtics so hopefully I can go see him and see what the hell he can do for me to keep me active and in socket. I'll keep you all posted.

My arm absolutely feels better today though. I can type again!

Fitness Update

I did the weigh in by myself today over at Curves where my Mom works. Here are the results.

170lbs (-1.2lb from last week)
11.9% body fat (-1% from last week)

So i'm still improving even with the neck injury. I worked out on Monday night and it felt good so I think I'm back in the game. I hope I can get back to 185 with 10% body fat. It will probably take quite some time but that's the goal!

No photos on Sunday because of tech difficulties and photographer difficulties (aka Jenny "the director!") So hopefully I can get some up tonight since it's been 3 weeks! Here is a fun comparison photo though. It's funny how much you can change the human body in just a few short weeks.

Donut Eating Contest

Ok so Tony and the guys at work have come up with another contest.. and.. it's not so fitness oriented. It's a donut eating contest!

Tony has 8 hours to eat 12 donuts. If he does he gets $40. If he doesn't he has to pay $40 out. We have an additional dozen Blueberry Cake and Boston Cream donuts that are worth $5/donut after the first dozen are put down.

Tony's goal is to recoup the $50 he lost on the fitness contest! To do this he will need to eat 2 donuts per hour throughout the day.

Ok, so now what?

Doesn't look so good in sales meetings

Ok now that the contest is over... now what? Well I'm kicking around a few ideas. Some are normal, some are stupid, and some are just nice things to do.

1. Stacey P (Scuba Steve's wife) was psyched about my progress and asked me to help her lose the last few pounds she's been trying to burn off. She has already lost over 30lbs in under a year! This will be a lot of fun but I'm a big prick when it comes to coaching so it may be the end of our friendship :)

2. I want to get down to 10% body fat and see a freaking 6 pack. It's a goal, are narsistic one, but it's good to have goals :)

3. Start competing. This is where I get a little silly. I'm not sure if I can/want to compete in the local Mixed Martial Arts in Boston. It's a pretty big scene with a lot of schools and events near me but I have a few problems with this.

a. I have a nagging dislocation issue with my right shoulder. So much so that my sensei made me stich canvas stripes onto my uniform to signify my injured arm. (He tore it out a few months back :)
b. Jenny is not a huge fan of me getting KO'd or injured or suffer a mean "ground and pound"
c. I don't want cauliflower ear (see above :) )

On the other hand

a. fighting is fun as long as it's done in a controlled environment or with friends. Getting stabbed, curbed, or shot obviously sucks. But smacking each other around is good time had by all.
b. I have really loved training over the 5 weeks and it would be amazing to train for something instead of trying to win a hot bod contest or some shit.
c. I love the martial arts but they offer no middle ground. it's either sparring, which is fun as hell but nothing like real fighting.. or the octagon which can get ugly quick.

Ugg who knows. I have energy and I need to channel it. I was thinking a nice mix would be amatuer kickboxing. Not too much damage and a whole lot of fighting but the schools are a bit far from me. .... so I think I am doing a Karate Tournament in October and maybe that will quench my thirst to compete. Maybe not.. maybe you'll see me getting my butt whooped in the next local UFC style event. Woot!

We have discovered that it may have been his lack of calories and protein in his diet. He worked out almost as much as me and started at the same body fat which should have landed him in 2nd or 3rd. The top 3 guys used protein shakes. )

I'm $150 richer and down to 171lbs - 12.9% body fat. I'll take photos when my neck allows me to lift again (probably this weekend)

Today is the Day

Well it's finally here. The last day for the competition. At 10am EST we'll hop on the scale and use the body fat analyzer. We didn't have a chance to do the measuring last week because of the chaos so it should be interesting to see who has climbed and who has fallen.

Win, lose, or draw I think there have been some life changing decisions around the office.

1. We all understand how we used to just plain eat too much.
2. We are avoiding high fructose corn syrup like the pluage.
3. It doesn't take a whole heck of a lot to just "Do It" and get in shape
4. Diet is absolutely as important as your fitness schedule
5. Lifting weights alone will not achieve your results

Can't wait for 10am! Wish me luck. I hope I'm $150 richer!!

Time for an update

So the last week or so has been pretty crazy with the MyFamilyCanhelp.com project. It's been a lot of fun and we had our first verfiable success story roll in on Friday.

On the fitness front I hurt my neck last Saturday (Sep 3rd) lifting weights. I spent a day or so in bed and worked from home. I tried to work out again and re-tweaked it. So now I am waiting until Monday to start any sort of workout again. It kind of sucks but I've been sticking to my diet so hopefully I have maintained body fat % and weight. The contest ends on Wednesday and I hope I can hang on to the lead!

Karate has been a lot of fun lately. A lot of things are finally clicking for me which feels good.

It was amazing to see how many of you rallied around the MyFamilyCanHelp.com project. Thanks for posting it to your blogs, alerting news agencies, and sending out mass mails to your company, family, and friends. If we can help just one family then all of our effort was worthwhile. Thanks guys!

Temporary homes for Katrina refugees

Hello,
My name is Jay Johnson. I am a 28 year old web developer and CEO of Hit Catcher, Inc. My development team and I created a web site to help those good samaritans looking to house refugees in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. It's a free service that allows refugees to search for homes and for home owners to list available space in their homes.

After hearing folks call into radio and TV stations asking how they could best volunteer their homes we developed a project plan and started development. The end result is a not-for-profit project developed off hours by the Hit Catcher staff and myself. It is our small way of helping in this great tragedy. A lot of folks are using different systems and web sites to alert refugees to available homes. We thought it would be a great service to create a one-stop (free) shop for both owners and refugees.

Trouble with my Coach

For the past few nights Jenny has been giving me hell for the amount of time I am spending at the track or upstairs with the gym. She is slowly becoming my anti-coach. It's all in jest but I gotta tell ya, it was way easier when she was forcing me up the stairs instead of begging me to come down and join couch potato land. Hopefully my willpower is stronger than hers.. but if history is any measure of the future.. I'm screwed. I will have to rely on my virtual family for motivation!! and if push comes to shove you may have to come protect me from the anti-coach!

2 more weeks of killing it and then I can get to a normal fitness schedule. Wish me luck!

Internal Medicine is art as well as science

So Jenny's Dad is a doctor at UMass Memorial and probably the most important thing I have learned from him in regards to medicine is:

Not all treatments work for all people.

The same principle applies with fitness. Everyone and their mother has advice on dieting and exercise. The truth of the matter is -- what works for me may not ever work for you.

The amount of variables involved with fitness in the human body has to be next to infinite. The basic idea of Eat Right and Exercise applies to almost everyone but in which way you do it is a matter of trial an error and most certainly preference. As Asphyxiate said recently... "Enjoy the process"

Interval Training

I started toning down my cardio this week from long endurance runs to interval training. Instead of 10 minutes on the bag at medium pace I started 1 minute blast runs. They are pretty killer and pretty exhausting but I hope it's as potent for the fat burning furnace. I'll keep you all posted on how effective it is for me.

I definitely look like i've lost weight and I think I'm about as skinny as I want to get. You can see new ab muscles creeping in at the top and I lost another inch in the waist but that hard to get rid off bottom-belly-fat is persisting. Looks like more cardio in my future. You can see more definition all around and it looks a little strange now that I actually towelled off the sweat! :) Eh well.. let's see what next week brings.

I can't wait to get to my bulking phase now! I feel too thin in this photo. PS - I took the photo in my work out room which had shelves of misc crap so I cropped it out. Looks cool on a black background anyhow! :)

I won't know my weight or my body fat until the official weigh-in on Tuesday. Hopefully i've made some progress there. I smell a victory!
