So one of my life long friends here at Hit Catcher (and SassyPants's brother) Todd joined the Fat Burning Contest last week and did a little experiment. He did anywhere between 900 - 1400 calories a day all last week. He did some walking but not too much exercising. He has proven, in house at least, that low calorie diets do exactly what the experts say they do. He lost 3lbs that week and gained body fat.
Moral of the story: You'll lose weight but unfortunately you'll actually be less muscular and more fat than before. Beware the low calorie diet.
Use this form at naturalphysiques.com (my inspiration) to see how many calories you should be eating a day at minimum.

Here's the basic idea behind losing "good" weight vs crash dieting.
You need to have a colorie defecit. But you still need to take in enough calories for your body to know it's not starving. If it thinks it's starving it will eat muscle and store fat. The exact opposite of what you would want.
Most likely you will need to eat about 1800 - 2000 calories per day but work out enough to burn 3000 - 4000 thus creating a huge deficit while not starving your body.
I'm new at this too but this is what i've picked up from the gurus and the books I've snagged
